In our recent review paper, we offer an overview of studies that focus on antimicrobial properties of human perinatal derivatives (amnio-chorionic membrane, amniotic membrane and chorionic membrane) and provide the first detailed analysis of protocols that are in use and an overview of the microorganisms that have already been tested. We highlight some methodological considerations that can be relevant for further advances in this promising field. By taking these considerations into account, future studies will provide crucial information that will enable reaching the optimal treatment outcomes using the fetal membranes and their derivatives as antimicrobial agents.
