The placenta is an extraordinary organ that forms during pregnancy ensuring the growth and development of the baby. It secretes essential hormones and protects the baby. The placenta is made of several tissues, cells and bioactive molecules, collectively called perinatal derivatives (PnD). After a baby is born, the placenta is normally considered a medical waste and thrown away. As PnD are a valuable source of stem cells, and other biological products that could be particularly useful for the development of new therapies, we have prepared a brochure for parents on how they can donate placenta to support its scientific and therapeutic use. The brochure has been translated into 7 languages and also into Slovenian. This activity is part of the objectives of the COST Action CA17116 titled The International Network for Translating Research on Perinatal Derivatives into Therapeutic Approaches.
